The Quadruple – Can Manchester City Do It This season?
2203
The domestic European competitions restart this weekend following the international break and the first game to be played in the Premier League is between Fulham and Manchester City at Craven Cottage.
Every match is big for Manchester City in the Premier League as they aim to fend off the challenge of Liverpool and win the title for the second successive season. Plenty of teams have won back-to-back titles in English football, including Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Portsmouth, Arsenal, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa.
However, this season means more than just the Premier League title for Pep Guardiola and his team. Last season, they broke several records on their way to the lifting the Premier League winners trophy but failed in the FA Cup and Champions League.
With a total of 15 games maximum remaining this season and the League Cup already in the bag, Manchester City have a chance to make more history, by winning the quadruple.
The Premier League title race has been well documented and could easily go down to the last game of the season. Manchester City have the experience of getting over the line but Liverpool seem set to push them all the way. Could the title winning experience of the players in the Manchester City squad be the difference when it comes to the crunch?
The two other trophies on the line are the Champions League and FA Cup.
The draw in both competitions have been kind to Manchester City and in the Champions League they have played Hoffenheim, Shakhtar Donetsk, Lyon, Schalke and Tottenham Hotspur are next in the quarter-final. There is not one serious contender for the trophy among those teams and they have been lucky to avoid the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester City will also avoid Liverpool, Manchester United and Barcelona in the semi-final should they make it.
The FA Cup quarter-final saw the demise of Manchester United, arguably their biggest competition from the remaining teams and they have been paired with Brighton and Hove Albion in the semi-final. With Wolverhampton Wanderers or Watford waiting in the final, Guardiola can think himself lucky in terms of who is left in the tournament.
Manchester City have already beaten Rotherham United, Burnley, Newport County and Swansea City in the FA Cup this season, none of which were expected to give them a serious test.
The fitness of key players well be important but with Sergio Aguero enjoying a break over the international week and every other player coming back fit, it was a good boost ahead of the season run-in.
Everything seems to have pointed in Manchester City’s favour this season in terms of the draws in the FA Cup and Champions League. The bookmakers have them as favourites to win the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup. They may need to win 15 games in a row to do it but last season they won 20 consecutive matches, so that would be nothing new for this team.
Manchester City have the talent, the manager and the experience to win 15 games in a row. So, the answer is yes, they can make history and win the quadruple this season.
