Brighton’s situation a worrying one
Brighton suffered a 2-1 defeat at Leicester on Tuesday night, which means that Chris Hughton’s side could finish the current gameweek just two points above the Premier League relegation zone.
The Seagulls are only in their second season in the English top-flight in its current guise. Last season the team from the south coast comfortably achieved their primary objective of staying in the top-flight.
However, somehow they have become the team who have slipped into the relegation battle at this late stage of the campaign, as there is usually a midtable team who are sucked into the battle at the bottom.
Brighton have now failed to win in seven Premier League matches, having suffered five defeats. A few months ago, they looked set for another comfortable midtable finish. Now they are in a fight for survival.
One saving grace for Hughton’s side this season may be that the league’s bottom two Fulham and Huddersfield already seem condemned to relegation, despite the Terriers late 1-0 win over Wolves on Tuesday night.
Another positive for Brighton is that they have to play many of the teams around them between now and the end of the season. Most crucially, considering their poor away form, many of those games are at the AMEX Stadium.
Huddersfield, Cardiff, Southampton and Newcastle all have to visit the Seagulls. If Hughton’s team takes ten points from those games, it should not matter what happens in away games at Spurs and Arsenal and a home match against Manchester City.
In short, Brighton’s situation is a worrying one. However, boss Hughton has the managerial acumen and some talented players at his disposal. The Seagulls should have enough in their locker to survive the drop but are certainly now in the dogfight at the bottom of the table.
