On Tuesday, Manchester United fired outspoken boss Jose Mourinho. The decision was a long time in the making, as United have played a brand of football that has been hard on the eyes in recent months.

It was not just the brand of football that led to Mourinho’s exit. It was also the fact that the Red Devils seem to have a near impossible task on their hands to mount a challenge for the Champions League spots.

United now find themselves 11 off the Champions League spots and a further eight points behind league leaders Liverpool. United as a club expect to be challenging for the Premier League title, but in reality, they did not have the quality to achieve that goal this season.

Jose Mourinho should have been the ideal man to revive United’s flagging fortunes when appointed in 2016. The Portuguese boss has proven his tactical acumen by winning countless silverware elsewhere.

When at his managerial best, he is one of the best tacticians in the European game. However, the Portuguese boss has a tendency to self-implode at times. His explosive personality is fine when his team is winning games, but when the wins dry up his moodiness tends to annoy fans.

The Portuguese boss has seemed unhappy at Old Trafford since the summer. He reportedly did not get the players he wanted in the transfer market and the team have struggled. However, Mourinho has spent big in his two and a half years in Manchester and the team are nowhere near challenging for the title.

Some experts have claimed that there are bigger problems at United than just the head coach. However, Mourinho was responsible for the style of football, the players that arrived and motivating his players.

From the outside looking in, he did a poor job towards the end of his reign, which is surprising considering that he is still considered by many as one of the managerial greats of all time.
