In last couple of days, there have been reports linking Mesut Ozil to Manchester United. This is a strange development, considering the body language and comments from the player and the club since last season. Going by comments from Arsene Wenger and even from Ozil himself, most fans expected that both parties would arrive at an agreement at a point and that the player would sign a new contract eventually, but if recent reports are anything to go by, that may not happen.

The German playmaker’s contract expires at the end of the season and by January, he would be free to enter into negotiations with interested clubs. Arsenal seemed bent on avoiding the situation that happened with Robin Van Persie where they had to sell him to a rival club because they didn’t want to lose him on a free, but as it turns out, they seem to be in a worse situation with two of their best players in Alexis Sanchez and Ozil.

Sanchez almost left for Manchester City last summer but the move broke down in the final minutes of the window. The only clear interest in Ozil has been from Inter Milan, but one would certainly expect that a reunion with Jose Mourinho who is one of his biggest fans would appeal more to him, but would the move be a wise one for the Manchester club?

The Arsenal man and Jose Mourinho have made no secret of their fondness for each other, with the player once saying that he only left Werder Bremen for Real Madrid because of the Portuguese tactician, and had him write the foreword to his book. Jose himself has on countless occasions expressed his admiration for Ozil’s quality, once calling him the best number ten in the world. One thing is clear, both of them would relish the chance to work together again and that can only be great for the club.

Ozil has not shown some of the killer quality that set him apart in his time at Real Madrid since he arrived at Arsenal, but he has shown that on his day, he is the north London club’s best attacking midfielder and creative outlet.

Manchester United could do with a player of his ilk as no player currently at the club has shown that he can make the number ten position his own. Henrikh Mkhitaryan was supposed to be the player to solve the club’s problem with creativity, but he has been erratic, to put it mildly, and Jose may be looking for a more consistent option. Mesut Ozil may be the player. This is not to say their relationship would be friction-free, but at least, the manager has shown once that he knows how to get the best out of the German.
