Monaco struggling to keep their best players
Monaco were one of the most exciting teams in European football in the 2016/17 campaign. Leonardo Jardim’s vibrant young team won the Ligue One title and also made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The team from the principality could well be a victim of their own success this summer, though. Inevitably their star players have attracted interest from more high-profile European clubs.
Manchester City have already splashed out £43million on Monaco’s Portuguese international Bernardo Silva. However, he is unlikely to be the last player to leave the principality this summer.
Teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe is now one of the most in-demand players in the European game. Spanish giants Real Madrid and Premier League Liverpool are just two of the teams being linked with mega-money offers for the talented French international.
Newspaper reports suggest that central midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko could be on the verge of a £42million move to English champions Chelsea. The 22-year-old had also been linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester United.
However, it seems the Blues will secure the midfielder's signature, which may lead to Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic moving to Manchester United.
To round off the rumours full-back Benjamin Mendy is being linked with moves to both Manchester City and Liverpool this summer. Unfortunately, it seems that Monaco’s exciting young team is being dismantled, albeit at a huge profit.
The French champions will have known that they would be unable to keep hold of their best players this summer. Clubs with far more spending power were always going to be able to offer their talented young player's far bigger financial packages.
Boss Jardim may well struggle to keep his team successful if he loses the core of his squad this summer, but it is the price the team pays for such a sparkling campaign.
