Everton and Belgium star Romelu Lukaku has been one of the top strikers in the Premier League this season. The former Chelsea forward scored 26 goals in all competitions and helped the Toffees to finish seventh in the Premier League to secure a Europa League berth for next season.
However, the 24-year-old has continually expressed his desire to play for a club in the Champions League. The striker is believed to be attracting the attention of the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, with the former believed to be favourites to sign Lukaku.
Lukaku’s agent Mino Raiola has added to the speculation by stating that Everton have promised the striker a move if certain clubs make an approach for the in-demand star. Raiola claims there are no offers currently on the table, but he expects there to be in the summer transfer window.
Chelsea’s interest in re-signing the striker is understandable, with the future of star striker Diego Costa in doubt. Lukaku would seem like an ideal replacement for the Spanish international.
However, one of the Everton’s striker’s main weaknesses is his hold-up play. Chelsea’s style of play under Antonio Conte requires the team’s main centre-forward to hold the ball up and bring teammates into play.
Costa may have his faults, but he is the perfect centre-forward in the way Chelsea play. Lukaku would have a lot of adapting to do. No doubt he would score goals for any team, but he apart from lacking the necessary hold up abilities he lacks the work rate and tenacity of Costa.
Romelu Lukaku is no doubt a goalscorer, but his all round play may still need improving if he is to play for a team hoping to challenge for the big trophies next season.
He may not be a ready-made replacement for Costa if the Brazilian-born star decides to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, so Chelsea may need to look elsewhere to sign a new striker.
