Lescott move illustrates Sunderland’s plight

Not much has gone right for Sunderland and their beleaguered boss David Moyes this season. The Black Cats are currently bottom having produced a terrible run of form of late.

Moyes recently told a tale of woe about the club's efforts to strengthen their squad. The north east side have added to their squad with the signing of free agent Joleon Lescott. The 34-year-old former England international has joined on a deal that will expire in the summer.

Lescott had been at Greek club AEK Athens but was released in November after just three months with the club. The signing illustrates the sort of market the Black Cats are operating in at the moment. The defender is Sunderland’s first signing of January.

Moyes seems to lack the financial backing of the club's owner, which means the former Everton boss has to sign players on free transfers and loan deals in an attempt to strengthen his squad in the winter transfer window.

One way the Black Cats could bring in funds is by selling players. According to media reports, highly rated full-back Patrick van Aanholt could be heading to Crystal Palace in a £12.5million deal. Moyes would be loathed to lose one of his team’s better players but needs the money to strengthen his squad.

Sunderland are unlikely to be able to sign many quality players for the mooted fee of Van Aanholt. It may give Moyes a small transfer budget, but it seems like the Scot will be scratching around for cheap additions to his squad, which as he stated last week would have little impact on the Black Cats squad.

The north east side are currently three points from safety in the Premier League. In recent years they have had a habit of pulling off great escapes from relegation. However, the current squad is low on quality and this may well be the season they finally drop into the second tier of English football.
