Can Newcastle United Win the Premier League This Season?

At the time of writing and prior to their game against Southampton, Newcastle United are in the top four of the Premier League.

The Magpies were not expected to compete for the top four ahead of the 2022/23 season but having found themselves in that position after 13 fixtures, is it possible they could go one step further and challenge for the title this season?

Much has been made about the money and the ownership of Newcastle United. Many football fans are disappointing with the takeover of the club by a consortium led by the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia.

With the new owners in place, Newcastle United are the richest club in world football, so it makes sense for them to start challenging for the big honours over time. However, could the challenge for the top honour in English football come earlier than expected?

Recent results show Newcastle United mean business. They picked up a point in a 0-0 draw at Manchester United and could easily have come away with all 3 points from that game.

Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur away 2-1, Aston Villa at home 4-0, and Brentford at home 5-1. With Liverpool yet to get going in the Premier League this season and the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur struggling for consistency, Newcastle United are in position to take advantage of the situation.

Pep Guardiola is one man who believes Newcastle United could challenge for the title this season. "Newcastle have a good manager and top-class players," said Guardiola. "I imagine they are going to stay there for a long time.

"They have physicality in the middle, box-to-box transitions and their intensity without the ball is impressive.

"Also, they are not playing in Europe, which is a big advantage because when you arrive in the last months you have energy."

Not playing in Europe could be a key factor when the Premier League season resumes. Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Manchester United have all played 5 fixtures more than Newcastle United this season.

That is only going to increase when the European competitions resume next year. In addition, Newcastle United have fewer players who will be representing their country at the World Cup, meaning they will be fresh when the Premier League resumes at the end of December.

There is no doubt Newcastle United are excelling at both ends of the pitch. Only Manchester City, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur have scored more goals in the Premier League than Newcastle United and the Magpies have the best defensive record in the league having conceded 10 goals in 13 matches.

Ahead of the game against Southampton, Newcastle United have lost only 1 Premier League game this season, which highlights how difficult they are to beat.

With the possibility of further investment in the squad in January, Newcastle United must be considered outsiders for the Premier League title this season.
