Kalidou Koulibaly is a shrewd signing by Chelsea

Media reports worldwide claim that Chelsea look set to complete the signing of Napoli and Senegal’s experienced centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly for a fee in the region of £33million.
The 31-year-old is expected to sign a four-year deal with the club from south west London. Napoli had to cash in on the defender, as he is now in the last 12 months of his contract.
The signing could prove to be a significant one for Chelsea, as Koulibaly has earned himself a reputation as one of the best central defenders in the European game in the last decade.
Signing at least one new centre-back was top of Chelsea’s priority list after the Blues lost both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers.
The former moved to Real Madrid, while Christensen joined their arch-rivals Barcelona. Signing Koulibaly is undoubtedly a step in the right direction to strengthen what is a far weaker backline than last season.
The experienced centre-back enjoyed a solid enough campaign last season. However, he has had far more impressive campaigns, winning Serie A’s best defender award in 2019 while also having been voted in the league’s team of the season four times.
The former Racing Genk player looks to be the ideal replacement for the influential Rudiger, who has seemingly improved every season since he arrived at the club.
Koulibaly is robust, quick and not scared of a tackle. He was also effective at the other end of the pitch, having involvement in six goals in the Italian top flight.
It seems that Koulibaly will not be the only defensive reinforcement this summer at Chelsea, as the Blues have been linked with moves for former player Nathan Ake, Jules Kounde of Sevilla and PSG star Presnel Kimpembe.
However, in Koulibaly, they may have made the summer's most crucial signing.
