When do the Top 5 European Leagues Start and Finish for the World Cup

The World Cup is set to disrupt the entire football calendar this upcoming season with the competition set to take place this winter. The 22nd edition of the tournament is set to begin on November 21 and run through to the World Cup final on December 18.
The top five leagues across Europe are now set to either start earlier or finish later to accompany football’s biggest prize, and we take a look at how the season structure looks across Europe in 2022/23.
Out of all the top European leagues, unsurprisingly, it’s the Premier League who are diversifying the least. They take the fewest days break between the World Cup and the league restarting, and action is set to resume just 10 days after the final.
The Premier League season will begin on the weekend of August 6/7, however, and run through to the final day on May 28. In reality, it’s pretty much the same schedule because they resume action so swiftly in December.
Real Madrid will be defending their La Liga crown for a 35th time this upcoming season, with action in Spain set to begin on August 12.
Similarly to the Premier League, La Liga stops three weeks before the World Cup and resumes within two weeks of the final. However, their season starts a week later than England, so they are running the competition through to June 4
Ligue 1 allows for a couple extra weeks to get the season finished in 2022/23. The French top flight will begin on August 6 and conclude on June 4. Ligue 1 also sees the action resume within two weeks of the World Cup final.
Serie A are one of the few top five European leagues who have accompanied the World Cup into their schedule with the thoughts of the players considered. The season starts a week earlier than usual on 13 August 2022 and will end along with other leagues on the weekend of June 4.
The biggest difference in Serie A and others, however, is how they take a break until early January after the World Cup final, compared to late December for others.
The Bundesliga and German football have always set the standards of player and fan care in football. It continues in the 2022/23 season, with the Bundesliga starting on August 5 and running through to May 27. Indeed, this is a week earlier than most seasons, but a German top flight club does only play 34 games.
More importantly for Bundesliga players, they take a 10-week break for the World Cup, and resume their action on January 20.
