When do the Top 5 Leagues in Europe Stop for the World Cup
1691
The 2022 World Cup is set to be like no other. Ever since the announcement way back in 2010, it’s been known to the public that the chances of the tournament moving to the winter to combat the extreme Qatar heat would be very likely.
Now, for the first time in 92 years, players have to prepare for a winter tournament, which means the club season will stop to let the World Cup get underway. So, when does domestic action stop in 2022/23?
When Does the World Cup Start and Finish?
Firstly, the group stage of the tournament begins on 21 November, with fixtures every day up until December 2nd, as Senegal v the Netherlands kicks things off.
December 3rd sees the round of 16 get underway, where there will be two matches per day, with the round coming to a close on December 6th.
A three-day break will commence before the last eight on December 9th, with two games played that day and the final two ties of the round the 10th. The semi-finals will be played out on the 13th and 14th of the month, before we see the final played out just seven days before Christmas on the 18th.
La Liga
As of now, La Liga doesn't have an official date of when they will pause and resume proceedings in Spain, but the provisional talks have been to stop action on November 13th, with no games set to be played earlier than December 29th.
Premier League
The Premier League was one of the first top leagues to state how they would work around the World Cup. England's first division will pause on November 14th and in brutal fashion for the players, action will continue just one day after Christmas on December 26th.
This likely gives Premier League players who make it to the last four in Qatar practically no break at all between national and club action.
Bundesliga
In similar style to the Premier League, the Bundesliga will pause their season on November 14th, just seven days before the first ball is kicked.
However, as Germany and the Bundesliga tend to set an example of how to operate in football, they are coming back on January 20th, meaning the league and the players get a healthy 33-day break after the final - exactly how it should be.
Ligue 1
Ligue 1 also follows near enough the exact same schedule as the Premier League, as they stop action on the 14th, before commencing the rest of the French top flight 10 days after the final on December 28th.
Serie A
No fixed dates have been penciled in yet for Italian football, but given how Serie A always have a lengthy winter break, it seems as if they will merely extend this winter break from November up until some time in early January, in line with the World Cup calendar.
