Arsenal slightly lucky to draw with PSG
Arsenal came away from their clash with PSG in the Champions League with what could be a crucial 1-1 draw. In truth, though the Gunners were slightly lucky to get away with a lukewarm performance against a PSG team that is still adjusting to new boss Unai Emery’s ideas.
Arsenal suffered a terrible start to their Champions League campaign last season, losing their first two groups games and only rescued qualification in their last game of the group.
This time around the Gunners achieved a point in probably what will be their hardest game of the group in Paris. Edinson Cavani scored after just a minute, but the Uruguayan should really have added to his goal tally, missing some fantastic chances.
However, he was denied on a number of occasions by Arsenal ‘keeper David Ospina, who boss Arsene Wenger had surprisingly picked ahead of the Gunners first-choice goalkeeper Petr Cech.
Questions were asked about Wenger’s decision to select Ospina after the Colombian’s poor displays in the Champions League early in the group stages last season. However, the former-Nice star enjoyed a very steady game and kept the Gunners in the game at times last night.
The side from north London always knew that PSG would offer them a big challenge, but they were never going to be a dominant force in the same way that Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich would have been.
In many ways, the Gunners were lucky to have been paired with PSG as top seeds in the group. It could have been much worse for Arsene Wenger’s men.
A draw against PSG in the opening Champions League game has to be regarded as a massive positive. The big-spending French giants are still the favourites to win the group, but at least Wenger’s side have now got their toughest game of the group of the way.
