We’ve used this opportunity to take a trip down memory lane to take note of the most memorable matches in Premier League history that had the most significant impact on the title race.
Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool - 2019
In what is a carbon copy of this weekend’s clash, Liverpool travelled to the Etihad knowing a win would have put them 10 clear in the title race and all but secured their first ever Premier League trophy.
Sadio Mane infamously had his shot saved off the line by a stunning 1.12cm, before Sergio Aguero scored in the first half for the champions. Roberto Firmino soon equalised, before Leroy Sane put his name in City folklore with the winner in the 72nd minute.
City eventually won the league by one point.
Manchester United 1-2 Chelsea - 2010
United led the Premier League title race throughout March and all they had to do for the final six games of the season was match or better Chelsea's results and they would win their fourth league title in a row. The Blues then travelled to Old Trafford knowing that if they won, the title was theirs to lose as all United had to do was draw.
It’s easily the most controversial game of all time in regards to title battles too, as images clearly showed Didier Drogba’s decisive goal was offside which in today’s world, would not have counted and United would have probably won the title as a result.
Chelsea would win the title by two points, meaning this game was mathematically the difference. Crazy.
Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal - 2002
The only addition to this list that saw the title immediately handed to the winner as Arsenal famously won the title back from United after a three-year wait, but what made this so extraordinary was how they did so at the home of their fierce rivals with just a game left to play after the Old Trafford showdown.
Sylvain Wiltord was the hero for Arsenal that day as his goal in the second half ensured they won the title in what is probably the most memorable away win in Premier League history.
Barely anybody laid a glove on United for years, so winning the title at Old Trafford is about as astonishing as it got back then.
Manchester City 1-0 Manchester United - 2012
It’s one thing facing your title rivals with two games left where the winner all but wins the trophy, but it’s another when it’s against your rivals just a few miles down the road.
City were hunting down their first league title in 44 years after seeing their neighbours rack up 12 of the past 20 Premier League medals, and it was Vincent Kompany who thumped in a header to give the Sky Blues all three points.
This gave City the lead in the title for the first time in many weeks as United’s lead was cut from eight points to nothing, as Roberto Mancini’s men went ahead on goal difference and won the league in that manner just two weeks later.
