It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Serie A has not been the most competitive league in recent years. In fact, you could argue that Juventus’ dominance destroyed Italian football throughout the 2010s.

Between 2012 and 2020, the Old Lady clinched nine straight scudetti. AC Milan, Napoli, Roma and Inter Milan all finished as runners-up during that period, but nobody came close to knocking Juventus off their perch.

However, Inter finally ended Juve’s hegemony in 2021. And if the current Serie A title race is anything to go by, the Nerazzurri’s triumph has paved the way for other sides to challenge for the scudetto.

With less than a quarter of the season remaining, the top four teams are separated by just seven points. Milan currently lead the way, with Napoli, Inter, and Juventus hot on their heels.

Can Milan hold on? Could Napoli claim their first title since 1990? Will Inter defend their crown? Or can Juventus overtake everyone to reign supreme once again? Let’s attempt to find out.

• AC Milan (1st): Games – 30; Points – 66

As it stands, Milan are in the driving seat. Thanks to an eight-game unbeaten streak before the international break, the Rossoneri find themselves three points clear of second-place Napoli.

Stefano Pioli’s men have won more games than anyone else and also beat Inter and Napoli earlier this year. Better still, they don’t have to face any of their title rivals between now and the end of the campaign.

• Napoli (2nd): Games – 30; Points – 63

Napoli’s title charge has been built on a solid backline, led by talismanic centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly. As a result, Luciano Spalletti’s side boast the best defensive record in the Italian top flight.

Although Napoli suffered a damaging defeat to Milan at the beginning of March, that is their only loss in their previous 11 league games. If they can remain unbeaten, they will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.

• Inter Milan (3rd): Games – 29; Points – 60

When Inter lost just one of their first 22 games this season, they looked destined to defend the title without any problems. Over the past few months, however, the reigning champions have fallen off a cliff.

Inter have only managed to claim one victory in their last seven Serie A outings, recording four draws and two losses along the way. Although they have a game in hand over their rivals, they need to start picking up positive results sooner rather than later.

• Juventus (4th): Games – 30; Points – 59

Not so long ago, Juventus looked dead a buried. After managing to win just six of their opening 14 league matches this term, the majority of Italian football fans had already disregarded them as title contenders.

However, the Bianconeri have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround under Max Allegri. Juve return from the international break on a 16-game unbeaten streak in Serie A, having recorded 11 wins and five draws since their last loss.
