Hull confounding the odds this season
Hull City started the Premier League campaign without a permanent boss, with just 13 available players and were favourites to be relegated back to the Championship. Yet somehow the Tigers find themselves third in the top-flight with six points from their first two games.
The Tigers opened their Premier League campaign with an against the odds win over Leicester and on Saturday won 2-0 at Swansea City. The fit players have done their club proud so far, producing the sort of performances that will be necessary to stay out of the relegation zone this season.
Caretaker boss Mike Phelan has done an excellent job in preparing the meagre resources he has available and forged a winning team. The club are in the midst of a takeover bid, so Phelan’s position may depend on whether the new owners want to give him the job on a permanent basis.
The way he has helped the club in their time of need he surely deserves the chance at doing the job on a full-time basis.
The experienced former Manchester United assistant boss has stated the club are attempting to strengthen their squad with less than ten days left in the summer transfer window, whether the Tigers will be successful in adding their squad or not remains to be seen.
One thing is for sure the Tigers limited squad and spirit will be tested next weekend, as they welcome Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United to the KCOM Stadium.
A victory against Zlatan Ibrahimovic and co would be a fairytale, but as we found out last season with Leicester’s title victory you have to expect the unexpected in the Premier League.
