Leeds dispenses with the services of Marcelo Bielsa

On Sunday, Leeds United hierarchy decided to sack veteran head coach Marcelo Bielsa. The decision came after a 4-0 home defeat on Saturday against Tottenham. The defeat was the White’s fifth loss in their last six Premier League.
The decision will not have been an easy one, as the Argentinian head coach has become a club icon in his close to four-year stay at the club. Bielsa’s sacking doesn’t seem to have gone down too well with the majority of fans, though.
Despite the team’s recent awful results and defensive displays, many Leeds fans still believed in Bielsa and his methods of football. He is much-beloved and respected by Leeds fans. The 66-year-old is also well respected in football by his coaching colleagues.
The Argentinian is considered something of a football innovator and many modern coaches have taken inspiration from Bielsa’s work down the years.
When Bielsa’s football works it is beautiful to watch and gets great results. However, when it doesn’t it can leave a team badly exposed in vital areas.
Unfortunately for Leeds, they have been awful in defence and Bielsa’s formerly working system has a lot to do with the team from Yorkshire having the worst defensive record in the English top-flight.
Bielsa is no doubt a great tactician, but like many great head coaches down the years, he is stubborn and not flexible when it comes to tactics.
His lack of flexibility has cost him his job, but the veteran was never going to change his style of play, as it is what he believes in and how his teams will always play.
The worrying recent form has seen Leeds drop to just two points above the relegation zone. What is maybe even more worrying the teams below them have games in hand.
Marcelo Bielsa will go down in the club’s history as a club hero. However, looking from a neutral’s point of view the decision to sack him is understandable considering their recent form and results.
