Signing John Stones is a massive gamble for Manchester City

Manchester City are continuing the chase for Everton’s highly-rated centre-back John Stones. The Citizens hierarchy are believed to be confident that they will sign the youngster before the Premier League campaign kick-off next weekend.

A mooted fee of around £50million is a lot to pay for a 22-year-old who last season looked to have regressed rather than progressed. Last season was one to forget for the youngster, as he made the most individual errors that lead to goals in the Premier League in season 2015/16.

Some will blame former boss Roberto Martinez, but in truth Stones lapses of concentration cost his side dearly last season. On average Everton conceded fewer goals in the seven Premier League games that Stones did not play than they did with him playing.

In short Stones looks like a gamble, wrapped in a risk for Manchester City. City boss Pep Guardiola is regarded as one of the world’s best bosses and he will need all his coaching ability to polish the rough diamond that is Stones.

The youngster does have promise, but most of that promise is based on the fact that he can step out defence with the ball. That is all well and good, but it is no use if he cannot get the basics of defending correct.

Stones still has plenty of time to cut-out the errors in his game and become a better defender. It would benefit both his club and England if he could fulfil his potential.

However, he has a lot of hard work ahead of him to become the top player that some are predicting he is going to be in the future.
