Ashley Williams would be a key signing for Everton

Everton fans have endured a frustrating summer, as promises of big-name arrivals and money to spend has resulted in very little of note happening in the transfer market.

That could all be about to change as the Guardian are reporting that the Toffees are set to sign Swansea and Wales captain Ashley Williams in a £10million deal in the next week.

Williams may be 32 later this month, but he is the sort of no-nonsense centre-back that the Toffees were crying out for last season. The side from Merseyside was woeful in defence. They were the team with the most individual errors that lead to the opposition scoring in the top-flight.

Former boss Roberto Martinez encouraged his team to build from the back, but his defenders made too many mistakes for that philosophy to be successful.

It now seems inevitable that young England defender John Stones is set to leave for Manchester City, so the Toffees are likely going to dip into the transfer market for another centre-back.

Everton fans have been here before, but it understood that a deal has been agreed and Williams is keen on making the move to Merseyside.

If he does complete the move his signing for be a key one for the Toffees. The experienced defender is a leader and somebody who is highly-respected in the game, despite his modest start to his career he is regarded as a very capable Premier League defender.

His first priority is to defend and that is what Everton boss Ronald Koeman needs with doubts over the fitness of Phil Jagielka and the prospect of Stones leaving. Signing the centre-back will definitely be a step in the right direction for the Toffees.
