Diego Costa can still be key player at Chelsea

Chelsea’s poor campaign last season was mirrored by the form of Spanish international striker Diego Costa, who endured a disappointing campaign finding the net just 12 times in the English top-flight.

There has been speculation and rumoured that the 27-year-old may now leave the Blues and head for pastures new this summer. Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has added to the speculation by stating he is not sure if the Spaniard will be at the club next season.

Costa enjoyed a memorable first campaign at Chelsea, scoring 20 times in his debut campaign as the Blues won the Premier League title. He had also been prolific in the previous campaign in Spain at Atletico Madrid, where he also won a domestic title.

He is no doubt a controversial character and he can be hot-headed on the pitch. However, his knack for scoring goals is indisputable. Last season was a blip in a Chelsea team that struggled as a whole for the majority of the campaign.

Atletico Madrid has been linked with a move for the Brazilian-born forward, with members of the club's hierarchy discussing Costa in the press. The club from the Spanish capital would be favourites to sign Costa if he was available this summer.

There would surely be other clubs interested in the striker, though. Atleti has also just spent big money on French striker Kevin Gameiro. With Antoine Griezmann already at the club, it would be difficult to see where Costa would fit in.

Diego Costa is still a fine player and despite the doubts about his fiery character, next season he could still be a key player for the Blues. On his day he is a match-winner and Chelsea need as many of those next season as they can get.
