Three huge European derbies to look forward to on Wednesday

Every once in a while, the football schedule produces days like this. We have not one, not two, but three high-profile derby games to look forward to on Wednesday – and they all kick off around the same time.

El Clasico – perhaps the biggest European derby of them all – takes place on unfamiliar soil, as Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid head to Saudi Arabia for the Supercopa de Espana.

Elsewhere, Inter Milan and Juventus clash in the Supercoppa Italiana, while London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea go head-to-head in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.

Let’s take a closer look at each fixture.

• Barcelona vs. Real Madrid (El Clasico)

Due to a deal between the Royal Spanish Football Federation and Saudi Arabia, this season’s Supercopa de Espana takes place in Riyadh. Still, the rivalry between Barcelona and Real Marid will remain the same.

The first El Clasico took place all the way back in 1902. Since then, Spain’s most successful clubs have traded blows on a regular basis – winning countless titles between them.

However, it’s safe to say that Real Madrid have the upper hand at the moment. Los Blancos have won each of their previous four games against Barca and currently sit 17 points clear of their rivals in the La Liga standings.

• Inter vs. Juventus (Derby d’Italia)

Inter and Juventus go head-to-head at the San Siro on Wednesday in the Supercoppa Italiana. The Italian Super Cup is played between the Serie A champions – Inter – and the Coppa Italia winners – Juventus.

For so many years, Juve have dominated Italian football. But Inter ended the Old Laday’s hegemony last season. The Nerazzurri are now the strongest team in the country and are favourites to lift the Supercoppa trophy.

Since the first Derby d’Italia back in 1909, Juventus have won 110 of the 242 competitive clashes between the teams. That said, Inter have enjoyed more success in recent times.

• Tottenham vs. Chelsea (London Derby)

Of course, this isn’t the biggest derby in London. The North London Derby between Arsenal and Tottenham is arguably the most prestigious, while West Ham’s rivalry with Millwall is special in its own way.

It could be argued, however, that Spurs are Chelsea’s biggest rivals. And it just so happens that the two London clubs are in the middle of an EFL Cup semi-final clash.

Last week, Chelsea won the first leg 2-0 at Stamford Bridge – dominating Tottenham in every department. The teams will meet for the second leg on Wednesday, with Spurs aiming to produce a remarkable comeback.
