Roy Hodgson’s team changes back-fired for England

Roy Hodgson’s team changes back-fired for England

England were left frustrated by a goalless draw against Slovakia on Monday night at Euro 2016. The draw coupled with Wales hammering Russia means that Chris Coleman’s side finished top of the group with the Three Lions second.

England fans were expecting boss Roy Hodgson to bring in forwards Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy, as both came off the bench and scored against Wales last time out.

However, the likes of Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshere were drafted in to replace key players Dele Alli and Wayne Rooney. Danny Rose and Kyle Walker were also replaced by Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne, with mixed results.

It was Hodgson’s messing around with the midfield that cost England the victory. The Three Lions veteran boss’ team selection almost suggested that he was that confident of victory he could rest key players in the clash.

In the end England got the draw and dominated the game, but they did not create as many chances as everybody connected with the Three Lions would have liked. Hodgson brought on Rooney and Alli in the second half, but by that time Slovakia were entrenched in their own half and there was very little room to operate for England going forward.

The veteran England boss does have a decent squad, but his team selection may put England in a tight spot. Their opponents for the last-16 with will be Hungary, Iceland, Portugal or Austria, none of the quartet have impressed in France.

However, finishing second in the group means that should England win their last-16 clash then they are likely to play hosts France in the quarter-finals, which could be the end of the road for England and their indecisive boss.
