Euro 2016 Golden Boot contenders: Cristiano Ronaldo
The Real Madrid forward is regarded by many as the best player in world football. The 31-year-old recently scored the winning penalty as Los Blancos beat arch-rivals Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final.
Ronaldo was not fully-fit for that clash, so did not have his usual effect on the game. He was also rested in Portugal’s 1-0 defeat against England on Thursday night.
Despite doubts over his fitness the former-Manchester United star will be highly-confident of making a big impact in France. The experienced forward is already his country’s leading goal scorer with 56 goals in 125 games and will be looking to add to his tally this summer.
Ronaldo plays as a central striker for his country with the support of former-Manchester United winger Nani.
However, the lack of quality attacking support could well be what hinders his chances of winning the Golden Boot in France. Portugal scored just 11 goals in qualification for this summer’s finals, so as a team they are far from prolific in front of goal.
The Portuguese have what looks like a relatively comfortable route to the last 16, as they face Austria, Iceland and Hungary. Ronaldo will fancy his chances against his Group F opponents, but faces a test of his fitness following a gruelling season for Real Madrid.
Ronaldo’s attempts at winning the Golden Boot will be depend on how far Portugal goes in the tournament. Despite being ranked 8th in the FIFA rankings the current team are not considered to be one of the favourites to win the trophy this time around.
Cristiano Ronaldo will be confident as ever of topping the scoring charts, but he faces an uphill battle to win the Golden Boot this summer.
