England boss Hodgson takes a massive gamble with Euro 2016 squad

England boss Roy Hodgson has taken a massive gamble with his 23 man squad for Euro 2016 and it could back-fire on the veteran.

Hodgson had to reduce his 26 man provisional squad to the 23-man squad required for this summer’s tournament. The players to miss out on the squad was midfielders Fabian Delph and Danny Drinkwater, as well as winger Andros Townsend.

Delph and Townsend missing out will not have been a major surprise considering that the pair were favourites to miss out on the squad. The decision to leave them out was not so controversial, but the decision to leave Drinkwater out was rather less understandable.

The likes of Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and Jack Wilshere all head into the tournament having all just recovered from injury. In fact, Sturridge and Wilshere have struggled to stay fit for the past two seasons.

Taking both players is a major gamble, while taking Henderson, who missed the last six games of Liverpool’s season through injury is also a risk.

The fact that Hodgson has decided to pick five forwards in his squad has also raised eyebrows, as the Three Lions boss is usually regarded as cautious. However picking the likes of injury-prone Sturridge as well as youngster Marcus Rashford is a bold or silly move.

Danny Drinkwater may not have been first choice in France for the Three Lions, but he would have been good midfield cover, which the Three Lions may lack with the exclusion of Drinkwater.

Only time will tell if Roy Hodgson’s decisions will be vindicated, but at the moment the current England squad looks like it lacks cover in vital positions and that is down to Hodgson’s squad selection.
