Who Will be in England’s Starting XI for the 2022 World Cup?

Who Will be in England’s Starting XI for the 2022 World Cup?

Following the comfortable 5-0 win in Andorra, England are well placed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. The remaining three group games look straightforward and it will be a surprise if England do not finish on 28 points, just 2 points short of a 100% record.

The Three Lions will travel to Qatar as one of the favourites to win the World Cup but who will be in the starting XI come the first game of the tournament?

The team that started the European Championship final against Italy was:

Jordan Pickford

Kieran Trippier     Kyle Walker     John Stones     Harry Maguire     Luke Shaw

Mason Mount     Kalvin Phillips     Declan Rice     Raheem Sterling

Harry Kane (c)

At the time of writing, there may be a couple of changes to that team for the opening group game at the 2022 World Cup. For a start, there could be a change in formation to allow for the introduction of Jack Grealish.

The attacking midfielder has been starting regularly for Manchester City this season and Gareth Southgate will be keen to find a place for Grealish in the starting XI. That could mean Kieran Trippier is the man to miss out, with Kyle Walker playing right-back in back four.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that the remainder of the team will stay the same. Raheem Sterling has not had a great start to the season for Manchester City but his performances for England have been good and Southgate will surely keep him in the team.

Phil Foden has shown glimpses of his brilliance following a return to action from injury for Manchester City and his performance in the Premier League against Liverpool was superb.

He offers something different to Mason Mount but again, Southgate likes Mount to be in his team for big matches and that is something that could continue at the 2022 World Cup.

It is going to be tough for the likes of Jordan Henderson and Jude Bellingham to break up the partnership of Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips. The pair have been excellent for England and it will take a serious drop in form for either player to be left out of the team.

Harry Kane has yet to come good for Tottenham Hotspur this season following the intense speculation surrounding his future in the summer. The striker has yet to score a Premier League goal this and that will be a bit of a concern for Southgate.

However, much like Sterling, the England manager knows he can trust Kane to produce the goods for his country and none of the other strikers in the squad are going to push the Spurs man out of the England team.

So, if there is a change in formation from the European Championship final, the one change to that team for the first game at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar could be Grealish for Trippier.

The other 10 players could stay the same unless there are injury problems. It will be interesting to see England continue from where they left off at the European Championship final, with the bulk of the same starting XI.
