On Saturday night, Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 in the final of the Copa America.

The victory ended La Albiceleste’s 18-year wait to win the competition and incredibly saw Lionel Messi win his first piece of senior silverware with his country.

The 34-year-old, whose contract with Barcelona has just expired has won junior international trophies, but silverware at senior level had proven elusive until now.

The lack of international silverware has always been a stick to beat Messi with for his doubters. It’s incredible to think he has won so many trophies and individual awards, yet he has people who still doubt his status as one of the best players to ever grace a football pitch.

Messi’s ridiculous goal tallies of a few years ago may have dipped slightly, but last season he still managed to score 38 goals in all competitions. In terms of goals, there are still very few players who are on the same level as the boy from Rosario.

The veteran star will likely believe that he had nothing to prove after everything he has achieved in the game. However, he was personally desperate to win a trophy with his national team after all his success at club level.

Now that Messi has finally won a senior international tournament with his country, he will likely turn his attention to his club future. He is a free agent, but Barcelona are attempting to find the money to re-sign their star player.

However, that is proving difficult because of the Blaugrana’s perilous financial situation.

The Catalan giants are working on a new deal for their talisman, who they are understandably desperate to keep.

Messi will likely be calm about his future though, as for now, he can enjoy his international success before another busy domestic campaign of football kicks off.
