Euro 2020 Golden Boot – Can anyone overtake Ronaldo?

Euro 2020 Golden Boot – Can anyone overtake Ronaldo?
3117

Although we have now reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship, the Golden Boot race is still wide open.

With five goals to his name, Cristiano Ronaldo is the current top scorer. However, Portugal are no longer in the competition.

The Czech Republic’s Patrik Schick is Ronaldo’s nearest challenger, having netted four goals in as many games this summer.

Karim Benzema (France) and Emil Forsberg (Sweden) both scored four goals before bowing out of Euro 2020 in the last 16.

Three players still in the tournament – Raheem Sterling (England), Romelu Lukaku (Belgium) and Haris Seferovic (Switzerland) – have three goals under their belt.

Ronaldo aside, here are the current top scorers who are left in the competition.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal (5 goals)
  • Patrik Schick – Czech Republic (4 goals)
  • Raheem Sterling – England (3 goals)
  • Romelu Lukaku – Belgium (3 goals)
  • Haris Seferovic – Switzerland (3 goals)

With a maximum of three games remaining for each player, Ronaldo will be hoping that nobody overtakes him in the Golden Boot race.

Needless to say, Schik, Sterling, Lukaku and Seferovic – along with a number of players with two goals to their name – will be desperate to surpass CR7.

Let’s take a look at the leading contenders for the Euro 2020 Golden Boot.

• Can Cristiano Ronaldo hold on?

There is still a real possibility that Ronaldo could finish as the top scorer at Euro 2020, despite having already exited the tournament.

The 36-year-old netted five goals in the group stage, bagging a brace against both Hungary and France. However, he will no longer be able to add to his tally.

Has Ronaldo already done enough to earn the Golden Boot? Or will he be overtaken? We will have to wait and see.

• Will Patrik Schick score again?

Barring something miraculous, Schick has already scored the goal of the tournament. But will he be able to move level with – or perhaps even surpass – Ronaldo?

The Czech forward scored three goals in three group games before finding the back of the net against the Netherlands in the round of 16.

With Denmark up next for the Czechs, Schick will fancy his chances of scoring again, especially as the Danes are one of the weakest quarter-final side.

• What about Sterling, Lukaku, and Seferovic?

Ultimately, it will be difficult for Seferovic to claim the Golden Boot. The Swiss striker has performed well up to now, but he is likely to struggle against Spain.

With a favorable route to the final, Sterling could finish as the top scorer. The Manchester City star has netted three of England’s four goals at Euro 2020 and continues to find great positions.

Belgium have a tricky quarter-final clash with Italy on the horizon, meaning Lukaku could get limited opportunities to add to his tally.

If anyone is going to emulate Ronaldo’s five goals this summer, it feels as though Sterling will be the man.
