7 high-profile free agents who could switch clubs in the summer

At the end of every season, there is always a list of big-name stars who are out of contract and available on a free transfer. This year, there are plenty of notable players on that list.

Jerome Boateng, Lucas Vazquez, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are just some of the out-of-contract players in the summer, but there are some even bigger names up for grabs.

Here are seven high-profile players whose contracts expire in the summer.

• Lionel Messi – Barcelona

Having almost left Camp Nou last summer, the idea of Lionel Messi departing Barcelona has been floating around for a while now. The 33-year-old has reportedly opened contract negotiations with the club, although he could still leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

• Gianluigi Donnarumma – AC Milan

It is easy to forget that Gianluigi Donnarumma is still just 22. After all, the towering goalkeeper has already made almost 250 appearances for AC Milan and has 25 Italy caps under his belt. However, his contract expires in the summer and he rejected a second offer last month.

• Sergio Aguero – Manchester City

Having racked up over 250 goals in just under 400 appearances for Manchester City, Sergio Aguero – the club’s all-time leading goalscorer – is heading for the Etihad exit door. At 32, the prolific Argentine still has plenty to offer, so he could move to another Premier League side for nothing.

• Memphis Depay – Lyon

It feels like Memphis Depay’s proposed switch to Barcelona has been on the cards for a long time. The ex-Manchester United flop has reignited his career in Ligue 1 and looks set to leave Lyon at the end of the season with his contract expiring this year.

• Julian Draxler – PSG

With stars like Kylian Mbappe and Neymar snatching the limelight in the French capital, it could be argued that Julian Draxler is underappreciated at PSG. So, with his contract due to expire in the summer, will the talented German opt for a move elsewhere?

• Sergio Ramos – Real Madrid

It has been reported that contract talks between Sergio Ramos and Real Madrid have stalled in recent weeks. The iconic Spaniard may be 35, but he is still one of the best centre-backs on the planet. It goes without saying that every major European club will be on red alert if he decides to leave the Bernabeu.

• Georginio Wijnaldum – Liverpool

Since swapping Newcastle for Liverpool back in 2016, Georginio Wijnaldum has made almost 250 appearances for the Reds – helping the club to achieve Premier League and Champions League along the way. It seems crazy that Jurgen Klopp would let him leave Anfield, yet he could go for nothing.
