The Best Seasons in Real Madrid's History

With 14 European Cup/Champions League titles and 35 La Liga triumphs, Real Madrid are the dominant force in world football.

This season, they are eyeing up another Champions League and La Liga double, so let’s look at their best-ever campaigns.

1956/57

Although things were nowhere near as competitive as they are in today's world, the 1950s was the most dominant period of any club in European football history, as Real went on to win five European Cups in a row.

Within this decade, they also managed to claim a few trophies on the domestic front as well, with the season of 1956/57 being their best within the 50s.

Led by the brilliance of Alfredo Di Stefano, who scored 31 goals that year, the club finished first in La Liga, conquered Europe once more, while they also managed to win the now non-existent Latin Cup.

Real was, however, knocked out of the Copa del Rey at the quarter-finals stage.

1988/89

Despite being so dominant in the European Cup throughout the 50s, Real had to wait a long time to triumph in Europe and went over 30 years without winning the Champions League.

They came desperately close to winning the title in 1988/89, losing in the European Cup semi-finals to AC Milan.

However, losing to a side like Milan back then was nothing to be ashamed about, especially given how Real won absolutely everything on the domestic front in 1988/89.

Hugo Sanchez was the main man 36 goals, 27 of which came in La Liga.

Real also lost just once in La Liga and finished five clear of Barcelona, defeated Real Valladolid in the Copa del Rey final and also defeated Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana final to win all three trophies in Spain that season.

2016/17

Similarly to the 50s, Real were the team to beat on the continental front by winning five Champions League within the decade for the second time in the club's history.

They were a super team at this period in time. Cristiano Ronaldo was at his peak, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema were banging them in, Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane were machines at the back, and Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Luka Modric formed a legendary midfield trio.

Ronaldo scored 42 goals this season, as Real won the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and also regained La Liga from Barcelona. It was arguably the club’s best-ever campaign.

2021/22

Despite not being as strong as they were in the mid-2010s, Real still managed to win La Liga and a record-breaking 14th Champions League in 2021/22.

What made these triumphs in Spain and Europe so impressive was how the club was ultimately in a transitional phase and not expected to claim both trophies, as both Varane and Ramos departed the club in the summer, and the superstar figure of Ronaldo was no longer.

Benzema was the hero this season, however, scoring 44 times to become the third Real player that decade to be a Ballon d'Or winner.
