It is typically believed that a football player’s career heads downhill once they turn 30. While the body does start to show signs of wear and tear, modern sports medicine, diet, and training, are helping players defy age.

Last season, the Premier League had several star players over the age of 30 thrive. Who were the top goalscorers 30 years old or older? The results may surprise you.

5. Kevin De Bruyne – Man City; 31

Kevin De Bruyne was one of the key players in Manchester City’s treble of titles in 2022-23. In the Premier League, De Bruyne made 32 appearances and scored seven times for Manchester City.

He was ever-present, helping the Cityzens lift the league title ahead of Arsenal.

4. Ilkay Gundogan – Man City; 32

Despite Manchester City winning a treble in 2022-23, they had multiple players over 30 regularly in the starting XI.

Manager Pep Guardiola relied on midfielders De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan to run the team.

Gundogan scored eight times in 31 appearances for City. The German scored some important goals in his final campaign with City before heading to Barcelona for free this summer.

Fifteen goals were scored by the over-30 duo of De Bruyne and Gundogan. That’s a great return.

3. Pascal Gross – Brighton; 31

Brighton player Pascal Gross may raise a few eyebrows on the list of top five Premier League goalscorers over 30.

Gross tallied nine league goals in 2022-23, helping Brighton qualify for Europe for the first time.

2. Callum Wilson – Newcastle United; 31

Callum Wilson could be one of the best Premier League strikers if he could just stay fit for long stretches.

In 2022-23, Wilson scored a total of 18 Premier League goals in 31 matches. He turned 31 in February and played 14 times over the age of 30.

In those 14 games, Wilson tallied 11 goals. From the start of April, Wilson was on fire in the Premier League for Newcastle, helping them qualify for the Champions League for 2023-24.

1. Rodrigo – Leeds United; 32

Without Rodrigo, it is likely Leeds United would have had a much worse 2022-23 season in the Premier League.

The Spanish forward scored 13 goals in 31 appearances. Had Rodrigo not missed seven games through injury, Leeds United may have done enough to survive the relegation fight.

Rodrigo will exit Leeds United this summer following the club’s relegation to the Championship. He is unlikely to pop up at another Premier League club despite scoring 13 goals in 31 appearances over the age of 30.
