The History of Manchester City and Inter Milan in Europe

The History of Manchester City and Inter Milan in Europe
2347

Manchester City and Inter Milan are set to clash in the Champions League final for what is the second final spot for the Premier League champions in three years with Inter in it for the first time since winning the treble in 2010.

Here’s a look back at the history in Europe between the two.

Inter Milan in Europe

Although Inter are level with their city rivals AC Milan with 19 league titles each, the club lacks behind considerably in the tally for European Cup/Champions League titles, as Milan have seven compared to Inter’s one.

Their sole Champions League triumph back in 2009/10, however, established Inter as the only side in Italian football history to win the historic treble.

Jose Mourinho led them out that night at the Santiago Bernabéu against Bayern Munich with stars like Wesley Sneijder and Diego Milito spearheading the Serie A outfit into the history books.

In their Champions League history, Inter have secured 98 wins from 204 games, losing 52 times and drawing the other 54 games.

It seems them head into the 2022/23 Champions League final with a 48% win ratio and 290 goals scored and 200 let in.

The Serie A giants have still managed to win the Europa League three times, however, and recently lost in the final three years ago against Sevilla.

This means their last triumph in that competition came back in 1997/98 against fellow Italian side Lazio, as Ronaldo stole the show in a 3-0 win.

Prior to that victory, Inter defeated another Serie A outfit, Roma, in the 1990/91 UEFA Cup final and RB Salzburg 2-0 in the 1994/94 final.

Manchester City in Europe

Given how City only first entered the Champions League back in 2011/12 and previously played in the European Cup just twice between 1968-1971, their history is being made in today’s world.

City did reach their first-ever Champions League final two years ago in a game they lost 1-0 to fellow Premier League side, Chelsea.

Previous to this, the club beat Górnik Zabrze in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970 in what is their only ever taste of European glory.

City have now won 65 of their 118 European Cup/Champions League matches and scored 241 times and lost just 29 games.

Pep Guardiola has taken charge of 76 of those games and won 48 times and now searches for his first Champions League title since 2011 with Barcelona.
