The Greatest Champions League Turnarounds in History

The Greatest Champions League Turnarounds in History

Liverpool are set to meet with Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 second leg this weekend, as the Reds head this one having to overturn another three-goal deficit.

Real lead 5-2, and we look at the greatest turnaround in Champions League history.

Liverpool vs Barcelona, 2018/19

If there is anything that should give Liverpool fans hope, it’s their stunning 4-0 win against Barcelona at Anfield after losing 3-0 in Spain.

Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona to a 3-0 lead in the first leg before the return fixture at Anfield, as his 599th and 600th goal stole the show. However, even with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino missing, the Reds turned it all around.

Divock Origi's early goal gave Liverpool hope, before Georginio Wijnaldum's double made it three. With extra time looming, arguably the most famous corner in Champions League history allowed Origi to smash in the fourth and give Liverpool a 4-3 win.

Roma vs Barcelona, 2017/18

Barcelona were also stunned just one year earlier too.

The La Liga giants took a 4-1 lead in the first leg at the Camp Nou, and nobody predicted Roma would get near to an upset.

Edin Dzeko scored to give fans hope in the Italian capital, before Daniele De Rossi's penalty forced a nervy finish for Barcelona. Kostas Manolas's 82nd-minute header would then turn Rome on its head as Roma created arguably their best-ever Champions League night.

Deportivo La Coruña vs AC Milan, 2003/04

In what is easily the most incredible, unpredictable and jaw-dropping night in quarter-finals history, Deportivo La Coruña stunned the European champions against the most outrageous odds.

Believe it or not, back in the day, Deportivo were quite a force, despite now being in Spain’s second tier.

The club were 4-1 down at the San Siro, and it should have been a routine night for the European champions. However, Walter Pandiani, Juan Carlos Valerón and Albert Luque made it 3-0, just before Fran González won it for Deportivo.

Barcelona vs PSG, 2016/17

No doubt the most famous one on this list is how Barcelona turned around a four-goal deficit for the first and only time in Champions League history.

Paris Saint-Germain ran riot in Paris to finish the first leg 4-0 up. As a turnaround of this magnitude had never happened before, nobody expected one.

A Luis Suarez goal after three minutes got the ball rolling, and an own goal and a Lionel Messi penalty got the Catalan giants right in with a chance at 4-3 on aggregate.

However, Edinson Cavani's finish in the 62nd minute seemingly ruined everything as it allowed PSG a two-goal lead once more, but worse yet for Barcelona, it brought PSG the away goal too.

A stunning free kick out of nowhere from Neymar still didn't give fans any hope, as the aggregate scoreline was 5-4 with two more goals needed in the dying minutes. Neymar then scored a penalty, before Sergi Roberto scored the winning goal in the 95th minute in what remains arguably the best comeback in any competition across the world.
