1224

The 2022 World Cup ended in dramatic fashion on Sunday, with Argentina beating France on penalties at Lusail Stadium. So, who were the standout players at this year’s tournament?

Four Argentina players have made it into our best XI, alongside stars from France, Croatia, Portugal and Morocco. Without further ado, here is Forebet’s Team of the Tournament.

Goalkeeper – Emiliano Martínez

Emiliano Martínez played a pivotal role in Argentina’s first World Cup triumph since 1986. The Aston Villa goalkeeper saved Kingsley Coman’s penalty in the final to set his team up for glory at Lusail Stadium.

Martínez also kept three clean sheets in Qatar, in addition to saving two penalties in Argentina’s quarter-final shootout against the Netherlands. Consequently, he received the Golden Glove award for his efforts.

Defenders – Raphaël Guerreiro, Joško Gvardiol, Dayot Upamecano

Although Dayot Upamecano failed to guide France to glory, the centre-back enjoyed an excellent World Cup campaign on a personal level – cementing his status as one of the best defenders in the game.

Raphaël Guerreiro contributed a goal and two assists as Portugal reached the quarter-finals, while Croatia’s Joško Gvardiol was immense. The 20-year-old was key to Croatia’s run to the semi-finals and will likely get a big move in the summer.

Midfielders – Ivan Perišić, Enzo Fernández, Sofyan Amrabat, Bruno Fernandes

Enzo Fernández picked up the FIFA Young Player Award after shining in Qatar. The 21-year-old Argentine provided a goal and an assist for his country, and also worked tirelessly throughout the tournament.

Portugal’s Bruno Fernandez bagged two goals and three assists, Croatia’s Ivan Perišić notched a goal and three assists, while Sofyan Amrabat produced multiple top-class performances as Morocco became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final.

Forwards – Kylian Mbappé, Julián Álvarez, Lionel Messi

Kylian Mbappé claimed the Golden Boot, racking up eight goals and two assists in seven games. He even managed to score a hat-trick in the final, singlehandedly keeping France in the contest until the very end.

Naturally, Lionel Messi finds himself in our Team of the Tournament after recording seven goals and three assists. The 35-year-old scored twice to help his team secure the silverware, scooping the Golden Ball award as a result.

Last but not least, Julián Álvarez produced four goals and an assist in Qatar. The Manchester City youngster grew into the tournament, bagging a memorable brace against Croatia in the semi-finals.
