Analysing Man Utd’s heavy Premier League defeats across the past 12 months
2025

Despite the arrival of Erik ten Hag, Manchester United have picked up where they left off last season. On Matchday 2 of the new Premier League campaign, the Red Devils suffered a 4-0 thrashing to Brentford.

Believe it or not, Man Utd have now lost six Premier League games by at least three goals across the past 12 months. In this piece, we analyse the Old Trafford outfit’s heavy defeats.

October 24, 2021: Man Utd 0-5 Liverpool

Liverpool notched a four-goal lead before half-time at Old Trafford. Early goals from Naby Keita and Diogo Jota put the Reds in command before Mohamed Salah bagged a brace.

Salah completed his hat-trick early in the second half. Ten minutes later, Paul Pogba was sent off. Man Utd finished the game with 36% possession and faced a whopping 19 shots.

November 20, 2021: Watford 4-1 Man Utd

The following month, United suffered a humiliating 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Watford. The Hornets scored two first-half goals before doubling their advantage in second-half stoppage time.

Donny van de Beek pulled a goal back for the Red Devils, but Harry Maguire was shown a red card shortly after. Unsurprisingly, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in the fallout.

March 6, 2022: Man City 4-1 Man Utd

Man City racked up 70% possession and 24 shots in March’s Manchester derby. Meanwhile, United managed just five attempts – two of which were on target.

Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both bagged braces as Pep Guardiola’s side embarrassed their local rivals. Despite Jadon Sancho’s first-half equaliser, City went on the dominate the game.

April 19, 2022: Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

Six months after the 0-5 thrashing at Old Trafford, Man Utd suffered a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. On this occasion, United saw just 28% possession and recorded one shot on target.

Once again, Salah punished the Red Devils – registering two goals and one assist as Jurgen Klopp’s side ran riot. There were also goals for Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane.

May 7, 2022: Brighton 4-0 Man Utd

The penultimate game of the 2021/21 Premier League season saw Man Utd lose 4-0 to Brighton. The Red Devils went into the break 1-0 down before conceding three goals in 11 second-half minutes.

Despite chalking up 58% possession and 15 shots, United failed to trouble the Seagulls. They also lost their final game of the previous campaign, falling 1-0 to Crystal Palace.

August 13, 2022: Brentford 4-0 Man Utd

Just when it looked as though things couldn’t get any worse, Man Utd found themselves 4-0 down inside 35 minutes against Brentford in their second game of the 2022/23 season.

A David De Gea howler set the tone for the occasion, leading to more nervy mistakes throughout the game. It is also worth noting that Brentford saw just 33% possession.
