Reading – Season Preview 2019/20
2223

After finishing 3rd in 2016/17, The Royals have registered back-to-back 20th place finishes in the Championship.

Having last featured in the Premier league in 2012/13, top-flight football is now a distant memory at the Madejski Stadium.

The fans will be hoping that Jose Gomes can drag the club out of the relegation battle and fire them up the table this season.

Last season

Reading spent a large portion of last season in the relegation zone but eventually finished 20th; seven points clear of the drop.

Only three sides in the division scored less goals than The Royals last term and the team only managed to win back-to-back matches on one occasion.

Manager Paul Clement was sacked before the turn of the year and was replaced by former Porto assistant, Jose Gomes.

Two wins and five draws in their last ten matches saw Reading secure Championship safety and the team will need to begin the new season in similar fashion to avoid another disappointing campaign.

Next season

Reading have made a number of astute signings in the transfer window.

Charlie Adam will bring a wealth of experience into the team’s midfield while the loan signings of Matt Miazga and Joao Virginia from Chelsea and Everton respectively will excite the fans.

Reading’s form noticeably picked up in the second half of last season and this coincided with the appointment of Jose Gomes.

Gomes will have enjoyed a full pre-season with his squad and now it’s time for him and his players to show the division what they’re capable of.

The club is capable of doing far better than they did in previous campaign. If they can pick up a few wins early on, it will give the squad a huge boost.
