With the international break now firmly behind us, it means we have a clear run of Premier League fixtures until the end of the season and this weekend the action resumes by the banks of the River Thames.

Fulham’s relegation to the EFL Championship looks all but confirmed now and although there have been signs of life under new manager Scott Parker, it is the same old defensive issues that have been their undoing.

This Saturday sees them play host to Manchester City and if those same frailties at the back are exposed by Pep Guardiola’s men, then it could well prove to be a particularly long afternoon for the Cottagers.

At the same time though, Fulham nearly blew the race for the title wide open in their last league outing and were it not for a late James Milner penalty for Liverpool, then the West Londoners would have found themselves earning a very unlikely point.

Saturday presents another difficult challenge for Fulham and you do wonder whether they have enough in them to test the other outfit chasing the title, or whether that performance against Liverpool turned out to be their last hurrah.

Before the international break, Manchester City found themselves in F.A. Cup action and for over an hour, it looked as if their hopes of winning an unprecedented quadruple this season were going to go up in smoke.

That’s because they found themselves 2-0 down away at Championship outfit Swansea and arguably were it not for the fact that VAR was not installed at the Liberty Stadium, then they would have been staring a cup exit in the face.

However, domestic cup domination is on the backburner this weekend and with City starting the weekend lying second in the table – albeit with a game in hand, it is obvious to what the objective will be.

Quite simply the aim will be to pick up maximum points and then ask another question of Liverpool and although the Merseyside outfit have answered everything that has been thrown at them of late, the visit of Tottenham on Sunday may be a different proposition.

However, with City having the wildcard of that game in hand still to use, it means that the destiny of the Premier League title is still very much in their hands and if they keep winning their matches, they will eventually go on to win back to back championships.

The fact that they’ve won their last six league outings is not something that can be dismissed and when you also allow for the fact that they have a superior goal difference over Liverpool, you would certainly have to suggest that they are currently in the box seat in terms of this titanic tussle.

This should prove to be a relatively routine win for the visitors and although the Saturday lunchtime kick-off can throw up the odd anomaly, it is not something that will pan out here. A win for City and Fulham one step closer to the inevitable drop.
