Everton to extend unbeaten run

Everton to extend unbeaten run

Marco Silva’s Everton are two matches unbeaten in the Premier League following a win away to Cardiff City and a draw at home against Liverpool. The Toffees are aiming for a strong upper mid-table finish after plenty of inconsistency in the early part of the term. Following back to back positive results, the pressure has eased on Silva. But a poor result against Newcastle will see it return.

Newcastle lost away to West Ham last weekend ending a three-match undefeated streak. Newcastle are just six points above the relegation zone and still in danger of the drop.

Everton have gained 15 of their 37 total points on the road this term. It is the 11th best total in the Premier League. They have allowed the fifth fewest away goals (18), but their inability to convert goalscoring chances have doomed them to seven road losses. Everton have scored just 18 goals away from Goodison Park.

Newcastle have won four straight home games. Three of those wins came against relegation rivals. Over half of Newcastle’s total points have come at home. Everton’s task will be difficult, but not impossible. Everton have lost just once to Newcastle in their last 12 games. Nine of those matches ended in Everton wins.

Rafael Benitez has a major player injury to worry about as Sean Longstaff suffered a knee injury last weekend against West Ham. Longstaff has been key to Newcastle’s improved play. However, he is set for an extended period on the sidelines. Other than Longstaff, Benitez has nearly a full squad to select from.

Silva has a fully fit squad for the fixture. Richarlison and Andre Gomes returned to the team for the Merseyside Derby and both played a part in the match. They should have places in Everton’s starting XI for the fixture at St. James’ Park.

Interestingly, Newcastle versus Everton has seen the most penalty goals (18) in the Premier League. No other Premier League fixture has had more penalty goals. Will Saturday’s match see No. 19?

Newcastle’s recent record against Everton has been poor. The Magpies have struggled against Everton and that will continue this weekend. Everton have a full-strength team. The return of Richarlison will be a huge boost as Everton get a win in a low-scoring game. Everton will leave St. James’ Park victorious with under 2.5 goals scored. The Toffees have kept back to back clean sheets. They will gain a third on Saturday with a win over Newcastle.
