Derby County v Sheffield Wednesday - Match Preview

Derby County ended their worrying four-match run without a win in the Championship on Tuesday night when they recorded a much needed 2-1 home win over lowly Wigan Athletic at Pride Park which would have brought a huge sigh of relief from Derby’s players, fans and most of all, manager Frank Lampard.
Derby had previously slumped to three defeats on the trot with losses incurred against Millwall, Nottingham Forest and a resounding 4-0 thumping away at Villa Park against west midlands rivals, Aston Villa which not many people would have seen coming.
In a curious twist of fixture fate, Derby County now have another three home matches on the trot in the Championship, starting with Saturday’s clash against Sheffield Wednesday, followed by visits from Stoke City and Rotherham United.
No doubt Lampard and Co will be eager to make the most of home advantage in these next few matches, especially as they harbour ambitions for a place in the play-offs and this is approaching make or break time for The Rams in what could be a pivotal period which defines their season.
Derby have been pretty solid at home though this term, having suffered just three defeats on home turf throughout this campaign, but they do leave the back door open on a regular basis and this is underlined by the fact that 10 of their 17 home matches to date have seen both teams score.
A few weeks ago, this fixture would have been penned in red ink by many people as a home win for Derby County as Sheffield Wednesday were drifting along with no particular place to go under former manager, Jos Luhukay, but The Owls have been transformed by the arrival of new boss, Steve Bruce, who has made an instant impact at the south west Yorkshire club.
Wednesday extended their unbeaten run of matches in the Championship to eight matches on Monday night when they held their fierce local rivals and 3rd placed neighbours, Sheffield United, to a 0-0 draw at Hillsborough in the Steel Derby, proving they’ve become no push-overs under Bruce.
The Owls have lost just once out of their last six matches away from home which was a 3-0 loss at Hull City before Bruce arrived, but wins at Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town along with points taken off West Brom, Millwall and Rotherham United make them a fairly decent proposition of getting something at Pride Park on Saturday.
Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday now seem fairly evenly matched and a draw may well be on the cards at Pride Park.
