There are some games in the Champions League which standout above all others and on Wednesday night we have a big game to look forward to in Germany.  Borussia Dortmund welcome Atletico Madrid to Signal Iduna Park for a match which will decide which team will top Group A of the Champions League.

Both teams have made a great start to their European campaign this season but a win for either team here would see them move one step closer to the Round of 16.

Borussia Dortmund have been in excellent form this season and their impressive 4-0 win at Stuttgart on the weekend means they are 3 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. Trends show that win was their sixth in a row and Borussia Dortmund are yet to taste defeat this season in all competitions.

They started their Champions League campaign with a tough 1-0 win at Club Brugge.  It was a match Borussia Dortmund were expected to win but the home team made it tough and the German’s needed a late goal to take maximum points.

There were no problems in the home match against Monaco as Borussia Dortmund eased away from their Ligue 1 opponents in the second half to take the match 3-0.

Borussia Dortmund have won all five of their home matches this season and trends show they have scored 3 goals or more in each of those five games.  However, they have won just one of their last five home Champions League matches.

Atletico Madrid have had a tough start to the season and find themselves down in 5th place in La Liga. Diego Simeone’s team were held to a 1-1 draw at Villarreal and while not the easiest place to go in Spanish football, it is a game they would expect to win when on form.

Trends show Atletico Madrid are undefeated in their last eight matches in all competitions.  They have won five of those games, two of which have come in the Champions League.  Atletico Madrid have defeated Monaco 2-1 away from home and Club Brugge 3-1 at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

However, Atletico Madrid have won only one of their last six away Champions League games and have scored one goal or failed to score at all in five of those matches.

Looking ahead to the teams news and Borussia Dortmund are without injured central defender Manuel Akanji so Dan-Axel Zagadou is expected to start the match in the back four.  Jadon Sancho could start alongside Marco Reus and Jacob Bruun Larsen in attack.

Atletico Madrid have a fully fit squad to choose from ahead of this game.  Diego Godin will partner Jose Gimenez in central defence with Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann playing up-front in a 4-4-2 formation.

This has the makings of being one of the best games in the Champions League this week.  Both teams are strong and will surely qualify from the group but Borussia Dortmund are flying at the moment and with the backing of their own fans should win this game.
