Wolves vs Burnley – Match Preview
It’s a fixture of contrasting fortunes this Sunday as promoted outfit Wolves, who have got off to a very impressive start to this Premier League season play host to a Burnley side who find themselves in the bottom three of the table.
It’s perhaps a little too early to be talking about relegation battles for Sean Dyche’s men but their failure to reach the group stage of the Europa League could actually turn out to be something of a blessing.
After a Summer transfer window only bought in three new faces at Turf Moor, questions were being asked as to whether the Clarets could cope with competing on both domestic and foreign fronts. One that was answered after being defeated by Olympiakos in the final qualifying round.
With the short European exploits behind them, it’s as if the season really starts for Burnley as they look to secure their first win of the campaign. However, that task is not going to be easy as they make the trip to Molineux.
A ground that has already seen Manchester City drop points here, and you get the feeling that they won’t be the last of the big clubs to make the trip to Wolverhampton and fail to come away with maximum points.
And it was maximum points that Wolves picked up in their last outing before the international break. A trip to East London saw them snatch a dramatic injury time winner against a hapless West Ham outfit.
Adama Traore was the hero of the day, the former Middlesbrough man has bags of pace at his disposal and he used it to incredibly good effect as his surging run and finish was rewarded with a goal that silenced an already half empty London Stadium.
That win over West Ham sees Wolves in the relative comfort of 11th place, although they will more than likely start the game a lot lower in the table what with playing a day later then the majority of the teams this weekend.
Not only that with such little distance between the teams in this early part of the season the movement up and down the table is a lot more volatile. However, that is a situation they can easily address should they manage to earn back to back wins.
Looking at the players that Wolves have at their disposal, then there is nothing to suggest why they cannot even finish in the lower end of the top ten. The one thing that may let them down is the lack of a killer instinct.
They have played some incredibly pretty football in the opening month of proceedings, but perhaps lack a real poacher in front in goal. That said with the money at their disposal, they could easily rectify that come January.
Burnley themselves have looked shy in front of goal, although ironically their only point of the campaign came in a game that they did not score. Their season opener against Southampton was a bore draw and since then it has been three losses in a row.
A run that is more than likely to be extended to four as this Wolves side will be buoyant after their win over West Ham. The home side to solidify their Premier League standing, while heaping more misery on the visitors.
