Real Sociedad picked up an away win against Villarreal to open the La Liga season. Asier Garitano’s team came from a goal down to best the Yellow Submarine.

Garitano is in his first season as Real Sociedad manager and the veteran coach is aiming for a better finish than last year’s 12th place. Leganes were defeated by Athletic Bilbao to open the season. Leganes were on target to get a point until the their defence gave up a winner to Athletic in the second minute of second half stoppage-time.

Leganes finished last season in 17th place. Although the club finished near the relegation zone, the side was still 14 points above the drop. Manager Mauricio Pellegrino has his work cut out for him. The manager joined Leganes ahead of this season after an unsuccessful spell in England with Southampton.

Real Sociedad have the better squad and on paper should finish the season challenging for a European place. The club debuted on-loan left-back Theo Hernandez along with Mikel Merino against Villarreal. Both contributed to the team’s comeback victory in a big way.

It was Real Sociedad’s veteran forwards Willian Jose and Juanmi that scored their goals. Both will be expected to lead the Real Sociedad line this term. Garitano is currently without star winger Adnan Januzaj.

The Belgian was in fantastic form last term. It earned him a call-up to the national team for the World Cup. Januzaj is set to return in September from a knee injury, yet it is another setback for the winger after he was expected to breakout this term.

Leganes tallied the third fewest goals in La Liga last season. Attacking midfielder Gabriel scored five of Leganes 34 strikes to lead all scorers. Leganes were able to hang onto the midfielder this season. Leganes were unable to get goals from their attacking players and forwards in their opening game. Left-back Jonathan Silva picked up Leganes’ lone goal. They are still having difficulty getting goals from their forwards.

Real Sociedad have met Leganes four times in recent history. Real Sociedad have won two of the four fixtures while Leganes have tallied just one win from their meetings. Leganes were able to win their home fixture against the Basque club.

Real Sociedad won their home match against Leganes 3-2. Their win in May was the first time the clubs scored more than 2.5 goals in a fixture. Leganes have conceded at least two goals in each of their last four matches. Based on form and their ability to score goals, Real Sociedad will pick up the victory on Friday night at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque.
