Bundesliga bottom dwellers to finish level

Bundesliga bottom dwellers to finish level

The last weekend of the Bundesliga season sees Wolfsburg in desperate need of at least point at home against Koln. A Wolves' win and a Freiburg loss to Augsburg would see the Wolfsburg emerge from the bottom three.

However, it looks like Wolfsburg could play in their second straight relegation playoff series if the team can simply get a point.

Wolfsburg have a lot to play for in the final game of the season. At the very least, Bruno Labbadia's team will want to stay in 16th place, which is the relegation playoff position. A loss and a dramatic Hamburg win on the final day would see Wolfsburg automatically relegated, while the Dinosaur would overtake them. So much is left to play for on the final day of the Bundesliga season.

Neither team go into Saturday's finale in good form. Koln have won just five matches this term, while losing a league high 21. The Billy Goats will spend next season in the Bundesliga 2, but the club can still go out on a high note. Koln haven't won since March 18 in a shock win over Bayer Leverkusen. They are now winless in six games and have conceded 17 goals. Despite form and a porous defence, Koln can ruin the season for Wolfsburg, Hamburg or even Freiburg, depending on how they perform Saturday. In Koln's last match, the team lost to Bayern Munich, but the champions had to work hard for their victory.

Due to Wolfsburg need for a single point to ensure a relegation playoff place, Labbadia may choose to sit back rather than attack. Liverpool loanee Divock Origi is expected to get the start for Wolfsburg as the team's No. 9. The on-loan striker has struggled for much of this season and regardless of where the Wolves finish, Origi isn't expected back. The Belgian striker has tallied just five goals in 30 matches and Origi hasn't scored since February.

The last time these two sides met, Koln won their first match of the season, 1-0. In fact, Koln have been a bogie team for Wolfsburg in their last six meetings. During that time, Koln have not lost to the Wolves, picking up two wins and four draws. History does not bode well for Wolfsburg.

For Koln, the final day of the season will be a stark contrast to the end of the term in 2016-17. On that day, Koln dramatically secured Europa League football and supporters rushed the pitch to carry the players off. That won't happen this weekend.

Wolfsburg only need a point to play in the relegation playoffs for a second straight year. The team will play for that point, and get it against Koln, who will be ready to start life in the second division.
