Sheffield United and Preston to end all square
So close yet so far is the best way to sum up the Championship season for both Sheffield United and Preston. Both clubs are within touching distance of the promotion playoff places, but with just six points to play for, it looks like both clubs will spend at least another season in the league.
Sheffield United had looked good for a top six finish. However, the Blades have won just once in their last seven matches. Last weekend's loss to relegation threatened Birmingham City was devastating and any hope of sneaking into the playoffs were all but dashed. Five points separate Sheffield United from sixth place Derby, and with only six points to play for, the playoffs are unlikely.
Preston haven't had such a torrid run as Sheffield United, but the Rams hot and cold performances haven't helped either. Preston peaked in week 10 when the club reached fourth place. However, seen those early days of the season, Preston have had to fight to remain in upper midtable. Currently ninth, just four points separate them from the playoffs. The Rams have a better shot at the playoff than Sheffield United, but the team must win their last two matches and hope those above them lose.
Preston took all three points when the two clubs met in December with a 1-0 win. The victory came during a nine-match unbeaten run enjoyed by Alex Neil's team. Although Preston has strung together a couple of solid unbeaten runs, the team has found scoring a difficulty this term. The Rams are 14th in scoring in the Championship with just 54 goals scored.
The team averages 1.2 goals a game from 13.4 shots. Preston's lack of goals is what have hurt most. The good news for Harris going into the weekend is Preston's healthy away form. The club has registered the third best points total away from home this term, and the Rams won't be afraid of Sheffield United's attack at Bramall Lane.
Consistency has hurt Chris Wilder's team this term, however, Sheffield United have been good at home. The team is fifth in total home points with 41, and the Blades' defence has been much better giving up just 19 goals at Bramall Lane. It is a stark contrast to the 33 the team has allowed on the road.
Neither club has been able to remain consistent this term and each has suffered devastating results in recent weeks that has hurt their chances for the postseason. Saturday's match between Sheffield United and Preston will end in a draw, and it will put to rest any chances the clubs had of gaining a spot in the promotion playoffs.
