Leeds to take points off of Wolverhampton Wanderers
Championship league leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers travel to 12th place Leeds United on Wednesday night. Wolves are coming off a 2-0 loss to Fulham a week and a half ago, as the club's recent fixture against Reading was postponed due to snow. It gave the club a few extra days to prepare for Leeds, whose inconsistent form has seen them all but eliminated from the promotion playoffs.
After a great start to the season and a few hiccups, Leeds have seen their bid for promotion fall apart. Since December 30th, Leeds have won just one match in 11 chances. The club's unveiling of a new badge for next season and the fallout from supporters hasn't helped, as the new crest saw thousands sign a petition to get it changed. In five of their last 11 matches, Leeds have been held scoreless. The team's defence has allowed 19 goals, while Leeds have scored nine times.
In early February, in an attempt to turn things around, Leeds sacked manager Thomas Christiansen. His replacement, Paul Heckingbottom, has won just once in five matches. His appointment has seen some improvement, however. Since Heckingbottom's arrival, Leeds have secured five of 15 points possible. It isn't great, but it was better than before.
Leeds have won 26 of 49 points at Elland Road this season. The team is +5 in goals at home. The Whites average 1.3 goals per match and over 50% possession. They will need the ball on Wednesday night against Wolves and to dominate possession. Pierre-Michel Lasogga leads the team in goals with 10. The German has scored three goals in his last five but hasn't found the back of the net in 164 minutes on the pitch.
Wolverhampton's large lead in the Championship is down to six points. Despite many calling Wolves the best team to ever play in the Championship, they are on the verge of collapse. The team is winless in its last three matches – two draws and a loss. The team's previous rock hard defence is no more as five goals have been conceded in three games. Defensive midfielder Ruben Neves will return to the team's starting XI. He missed Wolves' 2-0 loss to Fulham through suspension. He is an incredibly important player that is on the radar of Premier League side Manchester United.
Wolves are still +31 in goals, but none of the team's strikers are firing currently. Leo Bonatini has gone missing in front of goal. Benfik Afobe has only appeared as a sub since returning in January. He is yet to score for Wolves. Leading scorer Diogo Jota hasn't scored in his last four matches. Wolves need their forwards to get back amongst the goals to remain top of the table.
Wednesday night's fixture at Elland Road is a crucial game for Wolves. When they take the pitch, the team could only be three points ahead of second place Cardiff. The team has a lot of pressure on it, and due to that pressure, Leeds should get a draw on Wednesday night.
