La Liga’s Surprise Packages Meet in Catalonia

Prior to the start of the 2017/18 La Liga season, many fans were tipping Girona and Leganes to be among those finishing in the relegation zone.

This is Girona’s first season in top flight football following promotion last year but they have punched above their weight and come into this match sitting 10th in the table.  Their total of 31 points leave them well clear of the bottom three.

Leganes won promotion to La Liga in the 2015/16 season and just survived the following campaign, finishing in 17th place.  They start this match in 12th, with 29 points and a win would move them above their hosts.

Girona come into this match on the back of a 1-0 defeat at Sevilla last weekend.  This was their first defeat in five matches having enjoyed an unbeaten run of four games in La Liga.  Girona enjoyed wins over Las Palmas and Athletic Club plus draws at Atletico Madrid and Malaga.

Despite the loss in Seville, Girona could have taken something from the match but Francisco Aday missed a penalty and that was the difference between a draw and a defeat.

At home, Girona have lost only one of their last six La Liga games and that defeat was back on the 4th of December against Deportivo Alaves.  Girona have won each of their last three home league games, picking up wins against Getafe, Las Palmas and Athletic Club.

Girona have scored 9 goals in those three games, without conceding a single goal themselves.  Trends show there have been under 2.5 goals scored in Girona's last four league games.

Leganes will be disappointed with their most recent result as they went down 1-0 at home to Eibar.  This was another match billed as a battle between the minnows and it was the away team which came out on top.

That result means Leganes have lost their last two matches in all competitions, the other being a 2-0 defeat at Sevilla which saw the eliminated from the Copa del Rey at the semi-final stage.

Leganes have been struggling away from home and their only victory in their last eleven attempts on the road was a shock 2-1 win at Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey.  In La Liga, Leganes have failed to win any of their last eight matches, losing five and drawing three.

Trend show there have been under 2.5 goals scored in Leganes's last four games in all competitions and they have failed to score in each of their last three.

Team news and Girona are set to be without central defender Pedro Alcala who has an ankle injury but every other player should be available.

Leganes are also missing a defender as Mauro dos Santos is injured and they will also be without winger Alexander Szymanowski.  Centre back Dimitrios Siovas will miss the match through suspension.

Given the goal scoring form of both teams, this could be a tight game with limited clear-cut chances and we could easily see under 2.5 goals scored.
