Lyon Hope to Close Gap on PSG

The final match of the weekend in Ligue 1 is the most eagerly anticipated as Monaco host Lyon at the Stade Louis II.

This is a meeting between the teams in fourth and third respectively and Lyon will be hoping the league leaders, Paris Saint-Germain, drop points on Saturday and they can win this match to close the gap at the top of the table.

Monaco will also have desires on closing the gap to PSG and a win for them will move them above Lyon and into third place.

The hosts come into this match having booked their place in the Coupe de la Ligue final thanks to a 2-0 home win against Montpellier on Wednesday night.  That result means they have lost only one of their last twelve games in all competitions but the defeat came at home in the Coupe de France against Lyon.

Trends show Monaco have been very entertaining to watch again this season and they have scored an average of 2.3 goals in their Ligue 1 games. They have scored in each of their last thirty-one home league games and have scored at least 2 or more goals in their last four home Ligue 1 matches.

In addition, over 2.5 goals have been scored in six of their last seven Ligue 1 games and they have lost just one of their last twenty-two matches at home in the league.

Having defeated PSG 2-1 at home in Ligue 1 two weeks ago and then dumped Monaco out of the Coupe de France, Lyon lost 3-1 at Bordeaux last weekend, a team down in 9th place in the league.  This was a disappointing result given their previous results and Bruno Genesio will be looking for a positive response from his players on Sunday night.

Trends show the loss to Bordeaux was Lyon’s first in eight games in all competitions and their first in five away matches.

Before that defeat, Lyon won four away games in a row, with victories coming at Toulouse and Guingamp in Ligue 1 and Nancy and Monaco in the Coupe de France.

Much like their hosts, Lyon have been entertaining to watch this season and trends show they have scored an average of 2.26 goals in their Ligue 1 games.  They have also seen over 2.5 goals in eight of their last nine away league games.

Looking ahead to the team news and Monaco are without Adama Traore who is injured and have doubts over the fitness of Adama Diakhaby and Thomas Lemar.  Jorge should be fit to start the match at left-back.

Lyon must make do without Lucas Tousart who is suspended for this match.  This may see Lyon play in a 4-3-3 formation and Nabil Fekir drop into midfield, with Memphis Depay playing on the left of the attack.

This has the makings of a thrilling encounter and both teams have the potential to come away with maximum points.  Whatever happens, we should see goals and it would be a shock if there were not over 2.5 goals in this game.
