La Liga Basement Battle

La Liga Basement Battle

There are some important games in La Liga this weekend, at both ends of the table and the action gets underway with a match at the bottom between Real Sociedad and Deportivo La Coruna.

Both teams have relegation on their mind coming into this match and Real Sociedad start the game in 15th place, with 23 points from their twenty-one games played.  This leaves them 6 points clear of the relegation zone but not out of contention for the drop.

The relegation concern is much deeper for Deportivo La Coruna, who find themselves in 18th place, with just 17 points from their twenty-one games.  A win for Deportivo La Coruna would see them move up to 16th place.

Trends show Real Sociedad have lost each of their last four league games and they need to turn things around to avoid being sucked into a relegation battle towards the end of the season.

Two of the defeats have come at home against Barcelona and Celta Vigo while the other two have come on the road at Leganes and last weekend at Villarreal.  Real Sociedad conceded 11 goals across those four matches.

Real Sociedad’s last win came at home against Sevilla towards the end of December and that is their only win in their last eleven matches in all competitions.  They have also lost eight of their last ten games in all competitions and both teams have scored in nine of their last ten home La Liga matches.

Deportivo La Coruna travel to the Estadio Municipal de Anoeta in poor form themselves and trends show they have failed to win any of their previous six games.

The visitors have won only one of their last eleven league games and this is going to be a match between two teams who have forgotten what it feels like to win a couple of matches in a row, having not done it for some time.

Deportivo La Coruna have won only two of their last sixteen away games in all competitions and have kept only one clean sheet in their last fifteen matches on the road.  Both teams have scored in each of their last five La Liga games but Deportivo La Coruna have managed to score only 2 goals in their last five away from home.

Team news and Real Sociedad have lost key central defender Inigo Martinez to Athletic Bilbao and he will be a big miss for the remainder of the season.  The hosts will also be without David Concha and David Zurutuza, who are both injured.

Deportivo La Coruna have three players on the treatment table with Pedro Mosquera, Raul Albentosa and Sidnei injured.  They will also be without Celso Borges and Florin Andone who are suspended.

Both teams are desperate for a win a and this has the makings of a very close game.  Each team could find the back of the net here but Real Sociedad have shown in recent weeks they can score more goals than their opponents and could come out on top with a narrow victory.
