France to seal qualification with win in Bulgaria
European heavyweights France can seal their place at next year’s World Cup with a win in Bulgaria on Saturday night.
Bulgaria still have a small chance of finishing in second place in the group, but would need to win both their remaining games and hope the other results in the group go their way, which seems would be a remarkable turnaround.
The home side’s recent results in qualifying have been inconsistent, but defeats in Belarus and the Netherlands in their last two away games have hampered their qualification chances.
Bulgaria’s home record in qualifying is relatively good, though, as they have suffered just one defeat in their last 16 qualifiers. In fact, they have recorded four straight home wins in qualifying, including beating Sweden 3-2 in their last qualifier on home soil.
Petar Hubchev’s team have been prolific on home soil in World Cup qualifying of late, scoring two or more goals in four of their last six outings, including their last two.
France started the group as favourites to qualify automatically for Russia 2018 and are currently in pole position to do so. Despite being top dogs in the group, it has not all been plain sailing for Didier Deschamps team, as they somehow managed to draw 0-0 with group whipping boys Luxembourg last time out in qualification.
The visitors do however have a decent record in qualifying, as Les Bleus have won six of their last nine qualifiers and have suffered defeat just once in that run of games.
Deschamps side have actually endured mixed fortunes on their travels in qualifying, winning two, drawing one and losing two of their last five qualifiers on the road.
However, Forebet predicts that the visitor’s away form will improve in this clash and Les Bleus will record the win needed to qualify for the World Cup.
