Aston Villa to win at Colchester in the League Cup

On Wednesday night, League Two Colchester host Championship Aston Villa at the Weston Homes Stadium in the League Cup first round.

Colchester kicked off their League Two campaign at the weekend with a 3-1 defeat at Accrington Stanley. United also suffered a 1-0 defeat to Championship Ipswich in their previous outing in pre-season.

The home side have exited the League Cup at this stage of the competition in the last six seasons, whilst making the second round only once in the last eight campaigns.

However, Colchester have lost just one of their last seven games on home soil in all competitions, which was that aforementioned defeat by Ipswich in their last home outing.

These two teams have only ever met three times in competitive action, which all ironically have been in the League Cup. Villa won two of the meetings and Colchester have recorded one win.

Villa had a bit of an underwhelming pre-season, failing to win any of their games. The Villans took that form into their opening game of the Championship, as they drew 1-1 with Hull City.

The side from the Midlands overhauled their squad in the summer by signing the likes of John Terry, Christopher Samba and Glenn Whelan. However, their Championship opener showed that not much seems to have changed since last season.

Villa have exited the League Cup at this stage in the last two seasons, suffering defeats at Southampton and Luton Town.

The visitor’s away record on their travels is also poor, as they have won just one of their last seven games on their travels in all competitions. How this game goes will likely depend on if Villa boss Steve Bruce decides to pick a strong team or not.

Forebet predicts that Villa will have too much quality for the club from the fourth tier of English football and will progress to the second round of the competition.
