Sevilla have a golden opportunity to record a vital victory on Thursday night, as the Andalucian’s welcome Celta Vigo to the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Sevilla are currently fourth in La Liga, three points behind third-place Atletico Madrid, who suffered a surprise 1-0 home defeat against Villarreal on Tuesday night. Atleti’s slip-up means that the home side could move onto level points with the men from Madrid with a victory.

A third-place finish would see Sampaoli’s side clinch an automatic Champions League spot. A fourth-place finish, though, would mean having to play in a qualifier.

For much of the season, the home side have been seen as genuine title challengers. However, their recent form has dipped slightly, with a series of draws hampering their quest for an unlikely title triumph this season.

Sampaoli’s sides form has improved slightly in recent weeks, as they have taken seven points from a possible nine, so they will be confident of picking up what could prove to be a big win in this one.

A record of ten games unbeaten on home soil in La Liga is a decent one and Sevilla tends to be strong on their patch. They will also be coming up against a Celta Vigo side that could be distracted by their Europa League semi-final first leg against Manchester United next Thursday.

Celta are currently tenth in La Liga and their recent form in the Spanish top-flight has been poor, as the visitors have suffered three defeats in their last four La Liga outings. Those recent defeats have put pay to any late charges for the Europa League spots this season.

That means their attention is likely to be firmly fixed on winning the Europa League. With Celta’s attention elsewhere Sevilla should record a comfortable win and push Sevilla for that third automatic Champions League spot this season.
