Sunderland the perfect opponents for Spurs this weekend

Tottenham has endured a rather mixed season results wise. In the Premier League, they have won two and drew two of their games so far this season, with their most impressive performance coming against Stoke last weekend in a 4-0 win at the Bet365 Stadium.

Heading into a home meeting with Sunderland at White Hart Lane on Sunday the Spurs should have been in high spirits, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat against Monaco on Wednesday night in their opening Champions League game.

The change of venue to Wembley no doubt did not help, but the team just seemed flat, so the visit of hapless Sunderland to north London could be a welcome one.

This seems like the perfect game for Tottenham to get back to winning ways. Sunderland been poor this season under former-Manchester United boss David Moyes and have recorded just one point so far this season

Last time out they trounced 3-0 by Everton, as Romelu Lukaku blitzed the Black Cats in the second half. In truth, it could have been far worse for Moyes side, as the Toffees had other chances to extend their lead, but failed to do so.

The morale in the Sunderland camp will be at rock-bottom, while the Tottenham players will still be in decent spirits, despite that Champions League mishap in midweek. Pochettino’s players will also be determined to put things right following that poor display.

In short, if Tottenham are going to be challenging at the business end of the Premier League then these are the games they have to win. If Tottenham hit form in this then you really do fear for Sunderland, who were awful in defence against Everton last time out.

Tottenham looks likely to recover from that Champions League disappointment with a win, but anything else and people will be asking questions of Pochettino’s team.
